Stone Carving Quotation Guide

How to Compare Temple Stone Carving Quotations

A total price is not enough. Temple committees, heritage contractors and local dealers should first check whether two quotations include the same products, dimensions, stone, carving, packing and delivery scope.

The same product name can hide different specifications

A pair of stone lions may include or exclude pedestals. Dragon pillars may be one piece or sectioned, with shallow or deep carving. A paifang quotation may cover stone components only, or also drawings, packing, transport and installation support.

A useful quotation lets the decision maker see what is included, which assumptions were used and which costs remain outside the price.

Main quotation factors

Compare specifications and responsibilities before comparing totals.

Finished dimensionsHeight, width, diameter, base, thickness, quantity and sections. Volume and weight also affect stone, packing and transport.
Stone selectionStone identification, colour range, block size, grain, sample approval and surface finish.
Design and carvingReference style, number of figures or animals, relief depth, openwork, inscriptions and hand-finishing scope.
Drawings and changesProduction-ready drawings, revision rounds, old-piece survey, inscription checks and the treatment of later changes.
Packing and deliveryCrates, steel frames, marks, loading, origin port, destination port, insurance, customs, inland delivery and unloading.
Installation supportFoundation, crane, access equipment, installers, travel, local materials and responsibility for engineering checks.

WHAT EACH DECISION MAKER SHOULD CHECK

DEALER, CONTRACTOR AND TEMPLE COMMITTEE

Local dealer

Stable specifications and channel support

Check drawing compliance, quotation validity, client-file confidentiality, approval records, packing marks and remedy terms.

Heritage contractor

Interfaces and site scope

Check foundations, reserved holes, joints, lifting points, installation sequence, schedule coordination and structural responsibility.

Temple committee

Total budget and priorities

Check whether key products are complete, styles are coordinated, excluded costs are visible and work can be phased.

Put competing quotations into the same comparison table

A lower total is not meaningful until the scope and exclusions are visible.

ProductQuantity, finished dimensions, pedestal, accessories, component divisions and tolerance.
Material and carvingApproved stone, relief depth, openwork, hand finishing, inscriptions and surface finish.
Technical documentsSite measurement responsibility, shop drawings, structural information and revision allowance.
DeliveryCrates, inland transport, trade term, port, sea freight, insurance, customs and destination delivery.
InstallationFoundations, lifting equipment, local labour, consumables, remote guidance and on-site support.
After deliveryInspection period, evidence required for damage, repair scope and replacement responsibilities.

Common omissions include pedestals, deep relief, drawing revisions, reinforced crates, destination charges and lifting equipment. Ask each supplier to mark included, excluded and provisional items in writing.

Five questions to ask after receiving a quotation

  • Are the product list, dimensions and quantities identical?
  • Are stone, carving depth, finish and drawing scope the same?
  • Where do packing, sea freight, insurance, customs and inland delivery stop?
  • Who provides foundations, cranes, installation labour and site materials?
  • How will drawing changes, delays, damage and replacement parts be handled in writing?

Frequently asked questions

Products of the same height can differ in width, stone, form, relief depth, pedestal, accessories, sections, packing and destination. The main specifications must be compared together.
First confirm that the product list, dimensions, stone, carving scope, drawings, finish, packing, trade terms, transport, installation and taxes cover the same scope.
Prioritise the entrance and principal worship area, then phase gates, railings, steles and garden stonework while preserving interfaces and a consistent overall style.
