Confirm height, diameter, viewing distance and carving density so the dragon remains clear at the intended scale.
Temple Dragon Pillars
A dragon pillar must fit the building, not just a catalogue image. Height, diameter, column spacing, eaves, base, dragon direction, carving depth and whether the stone wraps an existing structure should be confirmed together.
Some dragon pillars are decorative while others interface with a porch, beam or existing column. Any load-bearing, seismic, foundation or metal-connection requirement must come from the responsible architect or engineer.
One-piece and sectional construction have different stone, container, road and crane limits. Joint positions, numbering and installation sequence should be agreed before carving.
Confirm height, diameter, viewing distance and carving density so the dragon remains clear at the intended scale.
Mark top and bottom joints, base, beam level, reserved holes, inscriptions and dragon direction on the approved drawing.
Divide and number components around container size, unloading access and crane capacity.
A useful quotation starts with the same scope, dimensions and delivery conditions.
| Site dimensions | Clear height, diameter, column spacing, base and beam levels, eaves projection and available installation space. |
|---|---|
| Carving | Single or paired dragons, ascending or descending direction, figures, clouds, relief depth, stone and finish. |
| Interfaces | Existing structure, joints, reserved holes, metal parts, lifting points and responsibility for structural design. |
The finished appearance may be similar, but the drawings and responsibilities are not.
| Decorative wrap or feature pillar | Confirm finished height, outside diameter, split lines, backing space, fixing points and the main viewing direction. |
|---|---|
| Building-related pillar | Where the piece relates to beams, foundations, load, wind or seismic design, the structural criteria must be issued and approved by qualified local professionals. |
| Carved zone | Separate the base, carved shaft, capital, beam soffit and connection heights rather than using one overall building dimension. |
| Joints and sections | Mark dowels, sockets, sleeves, embedded items, seams, unit numbers and the intended installation sequence. |
Confirm single or paired dragons, dragon-and-phoenix composition, head count and direction, rising or descending movement, claws, pearl, clouds, waves, figures and the treatment at the base and capital. Close-view main-hall pillars need careful facial and claw finishing; distant gate pillars depend first on a strong silhouette and legible layers.
If deep relief, full-round carving or openwork is proposed, the drawing should show retained stone thickness and vulnerable projections. The workshop can make and pack to an approved drawing, while structural safety and lifting remain under the project professionals.
The committee approves iconography, visual character and budget. The contractor confirms levels, beam soffits, foundations, interfaces and installation dates. The dealer or stone company controls drawing versions, stone batch, workshop scope, packing marks and confidentiality. A single revision register prevents conflicting instructions.
