Temple Stone Lions
Stone lion pairs can be made for temple gates, forecourts, main halls and clan halls. The form should follow the approved local reference, entrance scale and available base rather than a fixed catalogue size.
Southern Fujian, Teochew and northern guardian-lion forms differ in head proportion, mane, mouth, posture and the cub or embroidered ball under the paws. Send a reference approved by the temple so those details are not guessed by the workshop.
Overall height alone is not enough. Entrance width, step height, pedestrian route, left and right clearance, base dimensions and lifting access all affect a workable proposal.
Compare the actual stone sample, outdoor exposure, salt air, drainage, surface finish and future cleaning.
Mark the viewing direction and identify each lion before packing so the pair reaches the correct side of the entrance.
Approve overall and close-up photos with dimensions before reinforced wooden-crate packing.
A useful quotation starts with the same scope, dimensions and delivery conditions.
| Dimensions | Overall height, body width, base length and width, available placement area and any step or plinth. |
|---|---|
| Appearance | Approved reference, male and female features, mane, mouth, paw details, base pattern and inscriptions. |
| Delivery | Destination city or port, unloading route, crane access, foundation responsibility and required trade terms. |
Two pairs described as 1.5 metres high can look and fit very differently when body, head and pedestal proportions change.
| Finished height | Measure from the finished floor to the highest point and state clearly whether the pedestal is included. |
|---|---|
| Lion body | Record body height, maximum width and front-to-back depth. These dimensions affect entrance clearance, stone block size and crate volume. |
| Pedestal | List pedestal length, width and height separately. If a site plinth already exists, provide its usable bearing area and level difference. |
| Pair orientation | Mark viewing direction, left and right unit, cub or embroidered ball, mouth position and any inscription on the approved drawing. |
| Site access | Check gate width, steps, pedestrian route, eaves, temporary storage and the route for a crane or forklift. |
Bluestone and white stone are broad trade descriptions, and granite also varies by source and batch. Ask the supplier to identify the proposed material and approve a representative sample before production.
Compare dry and wet colour, natural variation, grain, surface finish and carving response on the actual sample. A matched pair should be cut from visually compatible material.
A stone company or dealer usually needs stable drawings, batch colour, packing marks and confidentiality. A temple or heritage contractor needs foundations, interfaces, lifting access and programme dates. A temple committee needs an approved form, local conventions, inscriptions, budget scope and named approval stages. All parties should work from the same final drawing register.
